Grief after Welthungerhilfe’s Burkina Faso country director dies in a terror attack

On Sunday 13 August terrorists carried out an attack in the capital of Burkina Faso, killing at least 18 people including the Burkina Faso country director of Welthungerhilfe, one of Helvetas’s partner organisations.
All at Helvetas are greatly saddened and shocked by the news of the death of Isidore Zongo, Welhungerhilfe’s country director for Burkina Faso. He was killed in what is presumed to be a Islamist terrorist attack on a restaurant in Ouagadougou, the capital of the West African state of Burkina Faso. Government sources say that at least 18 people died and a dozen more were injured. Several foreigners are apparently among the dead.

“We are shocked by this news from our partner organisation Welthungerhilfe. All at Helvetas, but especially our Helvetas team in Burkina Faso, mourn the death of a fine colleague and send our condolences to Isidore Zongo’s family and to his colleagues at Welthungerhilfe,” said Annette Kolff, Co-Head of International Programmes at Helvetas. Welthungerhilfe and Helvetas are both members of Aliance 2015.

Helvetas has 35 staff in Burkina Faso and fortunately all of them are safe. Helvetas is continually monitoring the situation in accordance with its security plans, having already stepped up our security measures after a terrorist attack a year ago very close to the scene of this crime. We will review the situation again after this latest attack.
